Stains don’t lie

The informal culinary experience “Stains Don’t Lie” took place in the working environment of a family-run carpet washery in a village nearby Basel. Surrounded by hanging rugs, damp air, and the rhythmic sound of carpets being beaten, the evening drew inspiration from the act of washing—not as removal, but as transformation.

Based on the processes of soaping, scrubbing, drying, and cleaning, the culinary experience translated the physicality of the washery into taste, texture, sound and gesture. In collaboration with food designer Tosca Waeber and pairing by gastronome Julia Füzesi, guests were invited to reflect on what stains can reveal—traces of time, use, and emotion that resist being fully erased.

Held in a space shaped by care and generational labor, the dinner emphasized the beauty of what remains. Stains were approached not as flaws, but as quiet witnesses—marks of presence, of contact, of life lived. The sensory qualities of the washery—the scent of soap, the rhythm of water, the textures underfoot—infused the experience, deepening the relationship between space, process, and cuisine.
